Canadian Medical Advisory Board
Our Medical Advisory Board is comprised of some of the most prominent physicians in Canada.
Jean Martin Laberge, MD, FRCSC, FACS
Chair of our Canadian Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Jean-Martin Laberge obtained his MD at Laval University. He specialized in general surgery at McGill University, and in pediatric surgery at Ste-Justine Hospital. On staff at the Montreal Children's Hospital since 1983, he was the Director of the Training Program of Pediatric Surgery at McGill University from 1994 to 2008, and from 1996 to 2008 he was the Director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the MCH.
Dr. Laberge is active in numerous organizations; among others, he was Chairman of the Examination Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada for Pediatric Surgery and was Chairman of the Specialty Committee in Pediatric General Surgery of the Royal College. He is member of the Workforce Committee and was Vice-Chair and Chair of the Fetal Therapy Committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association; he is an editorial consultant for the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Surgery International. He is past-president of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society, and president-elect of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.
Dr. Sylvia Asa, MD, Ph.D.
Dr. Sylvia Asa received her medical and post-doctorate degrees from the University of Toronto and completed her internship in internal medicine at Toronto General Hospital and the University of Toronto. In 2000, she became Pathologist-in-Chief at the University Health Network, the largest teaching institute of the University of Toronto that encompasses the Toronto General Hospital, the Toronto Western Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital. She is also a Senior Scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute.
Extremely active in endocrine pathology, Dr. Asa is affiliated with numerous professional organizations, including The United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology, The Endocrine Society, The Pituitary Society, the Pituitary Pathology Club and the Endocrine Pathology Society, of which she is a founding member.
As head of one of the largest pathology departments in Canada, Dr. Asa has made innovative changes to the practice of the discipline, with an emphasis on automation, electronic initiatives and telepathology.
She has served on Council and Executive of The United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology and is most honored to be elected President of this prestigious organization that provides educational activities for Pathologists throughout the world.
Louise Caouette Laberge, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Louise Caouette Laberge is a full time academic paediatric plastic surgeon, Professor of Surgery at the University of Montreal, Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Hospital Ste-Justine and Director of the Cleft Palate Clinic.
Dr. Caouette Laberge presently serves on the board of the Quebec Medical Association. Over the last few years, she has been invited as visiting professor to many teaching programs in Canada and abroad.
She is recognized for her expertise in cleft lip and palate surgery, ear reconstruction and treatment of vascular anomalies in children.
In addition, Dr. Caouette Laberge has travelled to many countries with Operation Smile and Operation Rainbow to provide volunteer surgery for children with cleft lip and palate. She has been the recipient of many awards both for her academic achievements and social involvement in the care of children at home and abroad, including the May Cohen Award for Woman Mentor from the Canadian Medical Association in 2006.
Dr. Walley Temple, MD
Dr. Walley J. Temple is Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Professor with the Departments of Oncology and Surgery with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
Dr. Temple received his MD degree from Queen’s University and completed his surgical oncology training at the Department of Surgery, School of Medicine at the University of Miami in Florida where he was an American Cancer Society Surgical Oncology Fellow. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Temple was recently appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Surgical Oncology.
Stanley Kutcher, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Stanley Kutcher is an internationally-renowned expert in the area of adolescent mental health and a national and international leader in mental health research, advocacy, training, policy, and health services innovation. Dr. Kutcher is also the Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health, building awareness and knowledge about mental health in young people through the development of an adolescent mental health program that encompasses health promotion, education and research, locally, nationally and internationally.
Dr. Kutcher most recently served as Associate Dean of International Medical Development & Research with Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine. At Dalhousie, he has been Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and has led in the development of the Life Sciences Development Association, the Brain Repair Centre, and the International Health Office. He is also the Director of the World Health Association Collaborating Centre in Mental Health at Dalhousie.
Dr. Kutcher was a founding member of the advisory board of the Institute of Neuroscience Mental Health and Addictions (CIHR) and a founding board member of the Canadian Coalition on Global Health Research. He has also been elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
His recent awards include the Gold Medal for contribution to neuropsychopharmacology from the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CCNP); Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association; Health Promotion Award from Doctors Nova Scotia; the Paul Steinhauer Advocacy Award from the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation; Canadian Champion of Mental Health – Research by the Canadian Alliance for Mental Illness and Mental Health.
Philippe Laberge, MD, FRCSC, ACGE
Dr. Philippe Laberge is currently a professor in the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology at Laval University. Doctor Laberge’s interests are in gynecology, mainly laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures and related clinical research. He has written numerous articles and done many clinical courses and preceptorships in endoscopic surgery across Canada, the United States and Europe since 1991.
Dr. Laberge was president of the Quebec Association of Obstetricians & Gynecologists from 2004 to 2006. His interest in the production of self-learning interactive multimedia computer programs in obstetrics & gynecology program won him first prize of the Association of Professors in Obstetrics & Gynecology in Toronto in 1995 for his program “Ectopic Pregnancy”. Together with the late Dr. Jay Cooper, he won the Robert B. Hunt award for best paper in the Journal of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists in 2002.
